LeadingSpace has been at the forefront of youth empowerment through a variety of impactful initiatives, including student leadership forums, editorial clubs, and career mapping sessions. With a strong emphasis on environmental leadership mentorship and journalism, LeadingSpace has engaged 80 volunteers, predominantly youth, alongside professionals contributing their expertise. These efforts have fostered a community-driven approach to education and advocacy, equipping young leaders with the essential skills and perspectives needed to tackle environmental challenges. This report details the activities and outcomes of our recent Career Mapping Forum 23/24, held on January 2nd, 2024, at the Ajiri Centre in Bungoma.
The Career Mapping Forum 23/24 aimed to provide youth with insights and guidance on career development, leadership, and environmental advocacy. The forum was graced by notable dignitaries, including Hon. Douglas Ejakait Okiring, CECM ICT Busia County; Dr. Kibe, a lecturer at Kibabii University; Ms. Bilha Inyanya from Family Bank; Debrah Nabu Kisongochi, CEO of Bungoma Rentals; and Pharell Luyaali Waffubwa. Their participation highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in shaping the future of young leaders.
The primary objectives of the forum were to empower youth with knowledge and skills for career excellence, promote environmental leadership and advocacy, foster community engagement and collaboration, and highlight the significance of climate change and sustainable development. To achieve these goals, the forum featured a range of key activities.
Interactive leadership workshops were conducted, emphasizing the importance of integrity, innovation, and resilience. Discussions focused on the role of young leaders in addressing climate change and promoting sustainability. Career mapping sessions provided guidance on career planning and development, focusing on aligning personal goals with market demands and offering insights into various career paths, including those in environmental fields.
The forum also engaged participants in discussions on the importance of environmental journalism in raising awareness and driving action. Success stories and best practices in environmental advocacy were shared, highlighting the impact of effective communication and storytelling. Networking opportunities facilitated connections between participants and professionals, fostering mentorship and collaboration and encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiences among young leaders.
The outcomes of the Career Mapping Forum 23/24 were significant. The forum engaged 80 participants, mostly college graduates and a few high school graduates. Overall, LeadingSpace has reached over 1,000 college students and 5,000 high school students since the beginning of our programs. Participants acquired essential skills in leadership, career planning, and environmental advocacy, empowering them to make informed decisions and take proactive measures.
The forum also strengthened community ties, fostering a collaborative environment for continued support and engagement. Emphasizing the importance of addressing climate change, the event inspired participants to take active roles in promoting sustainability. Feedback and testimonials from participants and partners were overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted the practical knowledge gained and the inspirational nature of the sessions. One participant noted, “The Career Mapping Forum was a game-changer for me. The insights and skills I gained will definitely shape my future career decisions.” Another attendee commented, “The environmental advocacy sessions were eye-opening. I feel more equipped and motivated to contribute to sustainability efforts in my community.” Such positive feedback underscores the impact and value of our initiatives.
